Thomas Jefferson once wrote, "Music is the passion of my soul." This essay by Stanford University Professor of Music Emeritus Sandor Salgo explores one of the lesser recognized aspects of Jefferson's life: his love of music and his talent as a violinist. Jefferson had an extensive collection of books on music and on the art of the violin in his monumental library. However, before now we have not known how his study of these books, called "tutors," influenced his musicianship and his abilities as a violinist.
