Thomas Mann hlt sich bei seiner Neugestaltung an die Vorlage Hartmanns von Aue. Inhaltlich wird die Idee von Snde und Gnade, die auch schon bei den JosephRomanen und im "Doktor Faustus" eine bedeutende Rolle spielt, als ein groer Themenkomplex im "Erwhlten" in positiver Weise ausgedeutet. Hinter offensichtlich von Thomas Mann verwerteten Quellen finden sich auch Textstellen, die auf keine nachweisbaren Quellen schlieen lassen. Diese betreffen allesamt das Thema der Auserwhltheit, das sich als Leitmotiv nicht nur im "Erwhlten" niederschlgt, sondern sich durch das gesamte Werk Manns zieht (Hanno, Tonio Krger, Aschenbach, Goethe, Joseph). Der erste Teil dieses Referates wird sich mit diesem Thema der Gnade und den damit zusammenhngenden Begriffen der Snde, Shne, Schuld und Bue beschftigen, whrend im zweiten Teil die angesprochene Erwhltheit der Figuren und auerdem der Erzhler und die Sprache des Romans behandelt werden. Die vorliegende schriftliche Ausarbeitung des Referates beschrnkt sich auf den ersten Teil der Ausfhrungen, ber die Stoffgeschichte des "Erwhlten" und das Gnadenthema im "Erwhlten".
