Thomas Manns Leben und sein schriftstellerisches Oeuvre wurden wesentlich durch Begegnungen, Freundschaften und Auseinandersetzungen mit Literaturwissenschaftlern gepragt. Unter ihnen ist die deutschjudische LiteraturProfessorin Anna Jacobson (18881972) die erste Frau. Der Brief, den sie 1925 als Dozentin eines nordamerikanischen Colleges an Thomas Mann richtete, markiert den Beginn eines Verhaltnisses, das wahrend der amerikanischen Exilzeit Thomas Manns jenseits der fachlichen Interessen zunehmend freundschaftliche und familiare Zuge erhielt. Die insgesamt uber 70 erhaltenen Briefe Thomas und Katia Manns an Anna Jacobson werfen ein neues Licht auf die schriftstellerische Existenz, die Werkplane und die politischen Positionen des Exilschriftstellers Thomas Mann. Sie werden hier erstmals vollstandig zusammen mit den erhaltenen Briefen Anna Jacobsons mit einem ausfuhrlichen Kommentar publiziert. Der Briefwechsel beleuchtet auch die Lebensform einer deutschjudischen Germanistin, die sich ungeachtet widriger Umstande zeitlebens um die Vermittlung deutscher Literatur in den USA bemuhte. Neben der Korrespondenz Kate Hamburgers (ThomasMannStudien Band 20) liegt hiermit der zweite Briefwechsel Thomas Manns mit einer Literaturwissenschaftlerin vor. Das Buch gibt der ThomasMannForschung neue Impulse, es vergegenwartigt Manns Schriftstellerexistenz im amerikanischen Exil und es bietet anregendes Material fur die Exilforschung und die Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Auslandsgermanistik.
