Aprs avoir consacr plusieurs annes d'tude au marquis de Sade, il publie, en 1991, une biographie intitule Donatien Alphonse Franois, marquis de Sade, aux ditions Fayard.Maurice Lever est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages, parmi lesquels, Les Bchers de Sodome (Fayard, 1985), Canards sanglants (Fayard, 1993), PierreAugustin Caron de Beaumarchais, biographie en trois volumes (Fayard, 1999, 2003, 2004), Je jure au marquis de Sade, mon amant, de n'tre jamais qu' lui...
