About the Author Juan Bautista Alberdi Aroz (Tucumn, 1810Pars, 1884). Argentina. Era hijo de un comerciante espaol y de Josefa Aroz, de la burguesa tucumana. Su familia apoy la revolucin republicana;Belgrano frecuentaba su casa y Juan Bautista lo consider un gran militar y un padrino, dedicando numerosas pginas a defender su figura. Esta actitud lo hizo polemizar con Mitre, y ganarse la enemistad de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Alberdi estudi en el Colegio de Ciencias Morales de Buenos Aires y abandon los estudios en 1824. Por esa poca, se interes por la msica. Poco despus estudi derecho y en 1840 recibi su diploma de abogado en Montevideo. Fue autodidacta. Rousseau, Bacon, Buffon, Montesquieu, Kant, Adam Smith, Hamilton y Donoso Corts influyeron en l. En 1840 march a Europa. Volvi en 1843 y se asent en Valparaso (Chile) donde ejerci la abogaca. En otro de sus viajes a Europa como diplomtico, pretendi evitar que las naciones europeas reconocieran a Buenos Aires como nacin independiente y se entrevist con el emperador Napolen III, el Papa Po IX y la reina Victoria de Inglaterra. Mitre y Sarmiento lo odiaron. Alberdi vivi entonces fuera de Argentina y regres en 1878, cuando fue nombrado diputado nacional. Haba sido diplomtico durante catorce aos. Las cosas haban cambiado: Sarmiento envi a su secretario personal a recibirle y lo abraz. Sin embargo, los mitristas impidieron que fuera otra vez nombrado diplomtico, en esta ocasin en Pars. Muri en un suburbio de dicha ciudad el 19 de junio de 1884.
