In 1982, Chris Cryer spent a year in Saudi Arabia, teaching English to women at King Saud University. Accompanied by her fourteenyearold son, and a few books by and about Leo Tolstoy, Chris found a sense of connection where she least expected it. The fastmoving, slightly comic, always fascinating adventure pulls us directly into the journey. We come to respect and love the motherson duo for their unprejudiced outlook and their coolheaded survival of matawas (moral police), strict laws, and customs. This book is one of very few based on true events, written from the inside out, that show the Arab side in the Islamic world, a place long held in mystery under the dark images of Western media. The author presents the Saudi culture at that time with a sensitivity to their need to preserve values and traditions in the face of modernity.

'In Riyadh' was a delightful exploration of teaching in a unique cultural setting. I admired how the author portrayed the teacher's challenges and joys. It’s a refreshing take on educational stories, and I will definitely be sharing it with my fellow teachers!

A Teacher's Perspective
This book, 'In Riyadh', beautifully captures the bond between a teacher and her student. The storytelling is engaging and really brought the characters to life for me. I found it inspiring and educational, perfect for anyone who appreciates the nuances of teaching.

Mixed Feelings About the Story
I enjoyed parts of 'In Riyadh', especially the cultural insights, but sometimes the pacing felt a bit slow. The characters were relatable, though, and I think many educators would find something to resonate with in the narrative. Worth a read, but don’t expect fast action.

Not What I Expected
Honestly, I was a bit let down by 'In Riyadh'. The plot was intriguing, but I felt certain parts dragged on a bit too long. I also noticed a few editing errors that distracted me from the overall story. It has potential, but it needs more polish.

A Heartfelt Read
I read 'In Riyadh' as part of my book club, and it sparked some interesting discussions! The relationship between the teacher and her muse is beautifully depicted, and the themes are relevant today. Definitely a book I’d recommend to fellow educators or anyone in the field of mentorship.
