Long before 68team brackets, championships in massive stadiums, selection Sunday and even Dick Vitale, college basketball tournament frenzy was a March tradition in Kansas City. From the first tipoff in 1905 ... an event that attracted thousands ... tournaments of the AAU, NAIA, NCAA and Big Eight/12 found homes in the downtown landscape and became part of Kansas City s sports DNA. The Kansas City Star didn t miss a shot, slam dunk or netcutting ceremony, telling the stories of the games, the championships and the visionaries who created and carried on this phenomenon. Tournament Town Kansas City: Where the Basketball Madness Began, by Star basketball writer Blair Kerkhoff and colleagues, is a collective effort of the writers, photographers and editors who shaped the coverage and chronicled the events. It tells the story of a city that gave college basketball tournaments a home, and in return the sport gave Kansas City a college hoop identity. The foreword is by Dick Vitale. It s the ideal time to tell these stories. Anniversaries are upon us. In 2012, the NAIA celebrates No. 75, and in 2013 the NCAA will recognize its 75th. Kansas City breathed life into both. On an almost annual basis the city rolls out the red carpet for the Big 12, and transforms downtown into a weeklong street party.
