The intention of this volume is to make the best of Curran on social ethics available under one cover for classroom use. In several essays, Curran masterfully charts changes in Catholic social ethics occurring over the past century. He critically appraises both official documents and the work of persons like Ryan, Murray, and Alinsky. He also outlines both the necessity and the limits of the church's involvement in the world. He constructively analyzes the Peace Pastoral, the population problem, and the right to health care. Few ethicists can match Curran for his broad grasp of theological and scientific materials. His book exhibits both balance and daring in displaying and advancing Roman Catholic social ethics. Religious Studies Review, October 1985 An excellent introduction to Roman Catholic moral theology . . . Curran follows contemporary theologians who argue that moral theology approaches human issues from a stance created by faith and religious experience, mediated by Scripture and the Christian tradition He describes his fundamental perspective by referring to five Christian doctrines: creation, sin, incarnation, redemption and eschatology. He shows that this multiple approach is more faithful to the whole of Scripture and offers many advantages in dealing with complex ethical issues. Commonweal, February 26, 1986
