Artiste majeur de son poque et grand thoricien de la peinture abstraite, Jean Dewasne (19191999) avait ds l'ge de trente ans entrepris la rdaction du Trait d'une peinture plane, texte parmi les plus pntrants en matire d'esthtique picturale et d'thique humaniste, mais aussi admirable plaidoyer en faveur d'une peinture libre, dlivre de toute tentation reprsentative ou figurative, belle par ses formes et ses couleurs, offerte tous au nom d'une solidarit dont le peintre n'imaginait pas qu'elle pt manquer la civilisation plantaire qu'il voyait se dessiner. Rigoureuse, complexe, ambitieuse, visionnaire l'occasion, la doctrine esthtique de Dewasne ne manque jamais de clart, tant son propos se rapporte toujours l'uvre et ses modes de ralisation. Au hasard de nombreux entretiens, accords de 1991 sa disparition par le peintre Grard Denizeau, un plan avait t tabli pour une version fidle de ses mditations thoriques et de ses manuscrits, scrupuleusement recenss et relus, de faon prciser la totalit d'un long cheminement intellectuel et esthtique. Le lecteur trouvera donc ici un chapitre introductif retraant, pour la premire fois, l'ensemble de la carrire de Jean Dewasne, puis son Trait d'une peinture plane, suivi par quatre textes issus de confrences lui ayant permis d'enrichir et de prciser sa pense. Enfin, deux annexes (bibliographie, expositions) compltent l'appareil historique et critique de ce volume consacr un grand tmoin visuel du second XXe sicle.
