Sono 13 libri con 467 proposizioni, scritti nel periodo greco classico . Attualmente, le carenze dell'originale geometria euclidea vengono superate modificando la dimostrazione di alcune proposizioni sulla base di assiomatizzazioni pi attuali (Hilbert, approccio metrico di Birkhoff), con speciale attenzione agli assiomi sulla continuit (Archimede, Dedekind). Inoltre, dopo Bolyai e Lobacevskij, si sono consolidate le Geometrie noneuclidee, rimanendo irrisolta la problematica del Quinto Postulato di Euclide, dopo i tentativi del Saccheri. Questo lavoro propone una soluzione al problema del Quinto Postulato, problema che incide profondamente sull'impostazione e sul significato della Geometria Euclidea, mentre le Geometrie noneuclidee rimangono comunque possibili e sempre valide, come ad esempio nella Relativit Generale.
