Bereits Taylor/Allen (1992) belegten den umfangreichen Einsatz der technischen Analyse anhand einer Umfrage von Devisenhndlern in London. Gehring/Menkhoff (2003) wiesen nach ihrer Befragung von deutschen und sterreichischen Devisenhndlern und Fondsmanagern zustzlich auf eine zunehmende Bedeutung der technischen Analyse in den letzten Jahren hin. Trotz ihrer umfangreichen Nutzug spaltet sie, wie keine andere Analysemethode, die Meinung ber ihren Nutzen zwischen Praktikern und Akademikern, steht doch ihr Hauptziel der Profiterzielung in fundamentalem Widerspruch zur Effizienzmarkthypothese. Dieser Konflikt hat neben anderen Aspekten die empirische Untersuchung der Profitabilitt oder zumindest der Prognosefhigkeit der technischen Analyse, insbesondere in den letzten 20 Jahren, in den Mittelpunkt der Forschung gerckt. Whrend der quantitativstatistische Zweig der technischen Analyse mit Oszillatoren, gleitenden Durchschnitten, uvm. auf mechanisch formulierten Regeln basiert und aufgrund der einfachen definitorischen und algebraischen Modellierung vergleichsweise einheitlich in empirischen Studien angesetzt werden kann, stellt die visuelle Chartanalyse, als der ursprngliche und ltere Zweig der technischen Analyse, bei der Untersuchung nach wie vor eine Herausforderung dar.
