La tesis doctoral consta de tres captulos que de forma colectiva examinan la estrategia de internacionalizacin de las empresas multinacionales (EMs) espaolas, con especial nfasis en el empleo proactivo del riesgo poltico para seleccionar las localizaciones en las que van a estar presentes. El primero analiza la relacin entre el riesgo poltico y el alcance de la internacionalizacin partiendo del modelo de Uppsala. El segundo se centra en la incorporacin de los nuevos pases procedentes del Este de Europa en la Unin Europea, prestando especial atencin al riesgo poltico y la calidad de las instituciones. Los resultados muestran que an existen diferencias entre las regiones Este y Oeste al seleccionar la localizacin de las inversiones. Por ltimo el tercer captulo analiza las inversiones directas en el exterior procedentes de los pases del Sur de Europa cuyo destino es una de las dos regiones en vas de desarrollo ms prximas, los pases del Norte de frica y los nuevos miembros de la Unin Europea. En estas regiones mayores niveles de riesgo poltico atraen empresas que han desarrollado habilidades polticas para obtener ventajas competitivas.
