Tristana' forma parte del ciclo de las obras agrupadas por el propio Galds bajo el epgrafe de 'Novelas espaolas contemporneas'. Este ciclo novelstico est dedicado a pintar la vida madrilea en la que nuestro autor ve concentrada la Espaa del siglo XIX. 'Tristana', sin embargo, funciona de una forma totalmente autnoma respecto al resto de las obras de ese ciclo novelstico: no aparece en ella ningn personaje recurrente en el mundo galdosiano, con la excepcin de los mdicos. 'Tristana' es representativa, adems, del periodo en que Galds se interesa ms por la verdad de la persona en su sociedad, y en particular de la mujer en su relacin con el hombre, que por la realidad de dicha sociedad a travs de tipos ejemplificadores. Por primera vez Galds se plantea en 'Tristana' el tema de la emancipacin de la mujer. Sin embargo, la soadora Tristana fracasa en sus intentos. Y el genial novelista pone una vez ms de manifiesto su capacidad para ahondar en el conocimiento de la sociedad espaola de su poca y analizar los aspectos negativos que la aquejan.
