On December 26, 2004, a monster tsunami struck several countries around the Indian Ocean. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed; whole towns were washed away. In this gripping account, learned through facetoface interviews with survivors, veteran reporter John Torres tells the story of that disaster and of the horrors it caused. In ageappropriate prose, he also describes the remarkable way in which the world responded. For the survivors, there is hope, even in the wake of one of the worst natural disasters in history.

I thought this would focus more on the humanitarian response. It’s more academic than personal stories, which I wasn't ready for. Still, it’s well-written and informative, just not quite what I was looking for.

A vital read for history buffs
This book on the 2004 Indonesia disaster really captures the enormity of the tragedy. The detailed accounts and photographs brought the events to life for me. Highly informative and necessary for anyone interested in natural disasters.

A haunting reminder of nature's power
The descriptions of the tsunami's aftermath are chilling and unforgettable. The author does a great job highlighting the human stories amidst the tragedy. I couldn't put it down, even though it was tough to read at times.

Great for educational purposes
This book is an excellent resource for understanding the 2004 tsunami. I bought it for my students, and they found it insightful. The information is credible and well-researched; however, a few sections felt a bit too technical for younger readers.

Fascinating but a bit heavy
I found the content compelling, but the book's depth made it a slower read than I expected. The details of the tsunami's impact are hard-hitting and necessary, but be prepared for an emotional journey.
