Author John Foley came to Alaska as a newspaper reporter. He taught in the Yup'ik Eskimo village of Gambell on a Bering Sea island. There, he and his wife learned about the Yup'ik culture, helped haul in a whale, looked out for polar bears on the way to school, and adjusted to life with a honey bucker. Foley also taught in the Athabascan Indian village of Tetlin, where his duties included helping a young woman adjust to the relentless pursuit of men. TUNDRA TEACHER examines Foley's relationship with the women in his life, his students, Native Alaskans, and fellow teachers. Told with humor, honesty, and a healthy dose of political incorrectness, it delves into a sometimes strange and always fascinating world.
