Joan was born in Denver, Colorado, USA in 1960. She was the seventh of eight kids in a big ol' Catholic family. In 1982, Joan got married and graduated from the University of Colorado in Engineering. Her kids grew up in Niwot, a small town outside of Boulder, Colorado. Extended travel has been a continuing factor in Joan's life. Bicycling and camping for six months in Australia and New Zealand in 1985 with her husband prekids gave her a taste of the liberating power of travel. In 1995, when their kids were six and nine years old, the four headed down to Central America and spent a year traveling around. In 1999, they took off again, this time spending six months in South America and another three months camping around the U.S. Joan worked in the field of energy efficiency, helping school districts, cities and state agencies identify, fund and implement efficiency improvements. Joan authored and coauthored reports, books and case studies. From 2006 to 2010, many things changed: Joan got divorced, her kids moved on to college, she traveled to Ghana, West Africa, participated in a 12step program and began studying meditation. Joan also left the engineering world to teach English in South Korea, Saudi Arabia and to international students in the U.S. Through a serendipitous combination of events, or possibly just a basic midlife crisis, Joan grew up ...a little. So, it was that during this period (in her late 40's), Joan learned some basic skills for living a more powerful, peaceful, and joyful life. Through acquaintances throughout the world, but especially in Korea where suicide rates are skyrocketing, the importance of these lessons became apparent.
