Erfahrungen der Orientierungslosigkeit, Sinnsuche und Bedrohung werden gehuft inmitten der Thematisierung von Grenzbereichen menschlichen Erlebens in Bezug gesetzt. Im Zuge dessen artikuliert sich innerhalb expressionistischer Literatur stets eine Tendenz zum Ekstatischen. Auffllig hufige Wechsel zwischen Begeisterung und Verzweiflung sind Indikatoren fr das schwelende' Gefhlschaos des zeitgenssischen Erlebens und werden gleichsam den Extremformen menschlichen Fhlens und Verhaltens ins Zentrum des (literarischen) Interesses gerckt. Zusammengefasst tauchen Rausch, Wahnsinn, Krankheit und Kriminalitt verallgemeinert quasi jegliche Anomalitt immer wieder in den verschiedensten Variationen auf. Dabei kommt vor allem bezglich der Darstellung angestrebter Wirklichkeitszertrmmerung (Gottfried Benn) den formalen Mitteln ein groer Verdienst zu: Reihungsstil, Metaphorik, Chiffren, Konnotationen, und Neologismen stellen besonders in der Lyrik epochentypische Merkmale dar. Gattungsbergreifend lassen sich Strukturen der Verdrngung des kausallinearen Erzhlens durch einen assoziativrhapsodischen Stil festhalten. Sowohl Symbolik als auch Metaphorik erfuhren bis dato ungeahnte Erweiterungen in ihrer literarischen Verarbeitung.
