Inhoudelijk zijn in dit drietalige naslagwerk over typografie en het schrift drie delen te onderscheiden. Allereerst een chronologisch overzicht in woord en beeld van de ontwikkeling van het schrift en de typografie, in omgekeerde volgorde: begonnen wordt met de huidige tijd en zo wordt teruggegaan tot de uitvinding van het schrift. De bedoeling van de auteurs was om informatie over typografie en het schrift zo geconcentreerd mogelijk bijeen te brengen, zij het dat dit terrein zo uitgestrekt is dat dit omvangrijke boek niet meer is dan een beginnetje. Alle teksten zijn opgenomen in het Frans, Duits en Engels. Door de meer dan tweeduizend illustraties is dit ook een fraai kijkboek geworden.
