El problema del trazado de grafos consiste en buscar una ubicacin de los elementos del grafo que maximice la legibilidad. Comnmente, para resolverlo se crean algoritmos especficos para determinados requerimientos de visualizacin, que son poco flexibles para emplearlos con otros requerimientos. Se propone una solucin flexible y eficiente para este problema, basada en el Escalador de Colinas Estocstico. Para fundamentarlo, se realizaron experimentos con ms de 200 grafos, demostrndose que este mtodo de bsqueda tiene un comportamiento superior a otros (por ejemplo: los Algoritmos Genticos) en el problema ms importante del trazado de grafos: minimizar los cruces entre enlaces. Se identificaron tericamente las causas de estos resultados: la reducida multimodalidad del espacio de bsqueda y el efecto destructivo del operador de cruzamiento. Tambin se introduce una forma eficiente de evaluar la funcin objetivo mediante el descarte eficiente de soluciones intiles y la eliminacin de clculos innecesarios. Los resultados de esta investigacin han sido aplicados en programas que muestran informacin grficamente.
