Es decir, a la 'Monarqua espaola' o 'catlica', trminos con que se design en su momento al imperio espaol. La tarea es tan necesaria como inmensa y ambiciosa. Este ensayo quiere contribuir a ese fin al proponer una seleccin bibliogrfica de la cual es esta obra el primer volumen. No se trata de una mera 'bibliografa', sino de un instrumento de investigacin que intenta sensibilizar al investigador a la interaccin e influencias recprocas entre la pennsula Ibrica y las Indias occidentales, sobre todo en sus tres ncleos principales: Nueva Espaa, Per y el Brasil lusitano. Las 550 referencias aqu reunidas, anotadas y comentadas, corresponden a estudios clsicos, tanto como a obras recientes de investigacin. Van precedidas de un estudio preliminar y se hallan dispuestas en cinco lneas o ejes rectores correspondientes a procesos histricos de las sociedades hispnicas en la larga duracin: las movilidades espacial y social, la presencia de las ciudades, la vocacin por el saber y la enseanza, el rey y sus jueces y la hispanizacin del 'Otro'. La inmensa mayora de los ttulos se halla disponible en el acervo de la biblioteca 'Daniel Coso Villegas' de El Colegio de Mxico. A ellos se accede mediante cuatro ndices dispuestos al final del volumen.
