Eine Verbindung von Ethnologie und Pdagogik bzw. Bildungstheorie kann heute nicht mehr funktionalistisch orientiert sein. Sie kann das Problem der Andersheit des Anderen und damit auch die Frage der Relativierung des Eigenen nicht mehr bergehen. Die unter dem Titel einer 'unbestimmten Transzendenz' versammelten Arbeiten versuchen, dieser doppelten Problemstellung zu begegnen. Sie tun dies in der Beschftigung mit Personkonzepten, mit der Unterschiedlichkeit 'traditioneller' und 'moderner' Subjektivierungsformen sowie mit Fragen theoretischer Selbstvergewisserung. Als programmatische Leitlinie der verschiedenen Untersuchungen kann dabei gelten, da es Verschiebungen im Stellenwert des Anderen fr die Thematisierung des eigenen Selbst gibt. Whrend dieses Andere in der neuzeitlichen Vorstellung als vom Subjekt zu bewltigendes Phnomen gilt, gehen 'traditionelle' Kulturen von der unaufhebbaren Bedeutung dieses Anderen fr das Selbst aus. Sie weigern sich aber, diesem Anderen eine Bestimmung zu geben, ber die es zu einem Mastab oder zu einer positiven Orientierungsinstanz wrde. In den Beitrgen wird sowohl auf unter einer bildungstheoretischen Perspektive rekonstruiertes ethnologisches Material wie auch auf eigene Feldforschungen zurckgegriffen.
