Ever since Charles Handys Understanding Organisations there has been a growing body of research and understanding about how organizations such as churches or parish groups grow and decline. In this book Malcolm Grundy draws on his study of this subject and his experience of working as consultant and trainer with clergy and layworkers in churches of all denominations Roman Catholics, Anglicans and members of the Free Churches. The theme which runs through this book is how clergy and lay people can be more effective by working together. Beginning with an understanding of what is taking place, he explores why some churches grow, change and develop and how they can be changed by the arrival of newcomers (possibly through Alphatype courses), and offers imaginative new ways forward.

This book has some great concepts but can be a bit dense at times. I appreciate the depth it goes into, though I had to take breaks to really digest the information. A good addition to my church library, just be prepared for some heavy reading!

Great Framework for Churches
I bought this for our church’s leadership team, and they found its framework very useful for planning. The ideas on adapting to community needs are spot-on. However, I wish there were more examples to illustrate the concepts!

A Thought-Provoking Read
Understanding Congregations offers a fresh perspective on how local churches can evolve. I found the insights on community building really enlightening and applicable to my own church. It’s definitely a book I’d recommend to fellow church leaders.

Had High Hopes, Lacked Clarity
I really wanted to like this book, but I found some sections unclear and hard to follow. While the concepts were intriguing, I struggled to apply them practically in our church’s context. Disappointed, to be honest.
