"L'anne commena par un djeuner. midi et demi, le petit restaurant tait complet. On pouvait admirer l quelques srieux convives: des familles entires avec cet embonpoint qu'on acquiert passer tous les jours deux trois heures table, les yeux sur l'assiette et les conversations remises plus tard. Le patron du restaurant, un homme qui, malgr sa corpulence, avait pouss la perfection l'art de virevolter dans son tablissement, avait revtu une tenue de circonstance: veste de smoking en velours et nud papillon. Sa moustache pommade frmissait d'enthousiasme tandis qu'il rcitait le menu comme on entonne une rhapsodie: c'tait une aria gastronomique qu'il attaquait chaque table en se baisant le bout des doigts avec un tel entrain qu'il devait en avoir les lvres gerces. Pendant le djeuner, ma femme et moi songions de prcdents jour de l'an, passs sous les nuages impntrables du ciel anglais. On avait du mal associer au 1er janvier l'clatant soleil et le ciel d'un bleu indigo. Tout le monde pourtant nous le rptait: c'tait absolument normal. Aprs tout, nous tions en Provence..."
