Puis Kant entreprend de dresser entre l'homme et l'Absolu une barrire protectrice, mais elle s'avre bientt prcaire et poreuse. Schiller fait de la rconciliation l'attribut majeur de l'Absolu, et installe celuici dans le pass et dans l'avenir ; nous pouvons donc nous en approcher par la mmoire et par l'espoir, mais cela ne suffit pas sauver notre prsent. Bravant les interdits de Kant, Hderlin s'lance comme un nouvel Icare audevant de l'Absolu, et retombe foudroy. Kleist au contraire respecte scrupuleusement la frontire trace par Kant, mais il dcouvre qu' l'intrieur de la contre ainsi dlimite la vie est impossible, et il en tire les consquences. La morale de ces histoires est la fois banale et dsespre : nous ne pouvons pas vivre avec l'Absolu, et nous ne pouvons pas vivre sans lui. Refuser le divertissement, s'tablir dans cette contradiction et en accepter les effets, telle est alors la voie que nous enseigne, pour le meilleur et pour le pire, cette " passion allemande ".
