Car le plerinage ne se rsume pas la succession des rituels : il faut aussi y apprendre une nouvelle forme de quotidien, apprivoiser la promiscuit, arpenter les marchs. Et, bien avant l'arrive en Arabie saoudite, lors des prparatifs, dj se dessine la dimension conomique de cette aventure : la foi ellemme est prise dans les courants de la marchandise... Enfin, audel du tmoignage, Abdellah Hammoudi propose une rflexion indite sur le sens des rituels qui rythment le plerinage : telle une intrigue qui progresse vers son dnouement, le plerinage s'empare des vies humaines du sens du temps, des enjeux politiques, des rgles du commerce... et les transforme. About the Author Abdellah Hammoudi a enseign de 1972 1989 au Maroc. Il est professeur d'anthropologie l'universit de Princeton (tatsUnis) depuis 1990 et directeur de l'Institut des tudes transrgionales(19942004) dans la mme universit. Il est notamment l'auteur de La Victime et ses masques, Seuil, 1988, et de Master and Disciple : The Cultural Foundation of Moroccan Authoritarianism, The University of Chicago Press, 1997.
