Although Africa has long been known to be rich in oil, extracting it hadnt seemed worth the effort and risk until recently. But with the price of Middle Eastern crude oil skyrocketing and advancing technology making reserves easier to tap, the region has become the scene of a competition between major powers that recalls the nineteenthcentury scramble for colonization there. But what does this giddy new oil boom meanfor America, for the world, for Africans themselves?John Ghazvinian traveled through twelve African countriesfrom Sudan to Congo to Angolatalking to warlords, industry executives, bandits, activists, priests, missionaries, oilrig workers, scientists, and ordinary people whose lives have been transformednot necessarily for the betterby the riches beneath their feet. The result is a highoctane narrative that reveals the challenges, obstacles, reasons for despair, and reasons for hope emerging from one of the worlds energy hot spots.

This book covers a lot of ground about Africa's oil industry, but sometimes it felt a little overwhelming. I enjoyed the information, but the writing could be clearer in a few spots. Still, worth a read if you're really into the subject.

Disappointed with the Coverage
I had high hopes for this book, but it didn't meet my expectations. Some sections felt rushed, and I was hoping for deeper insights into specific countries. I expected more on the socio-economic impacts of oil extraction as well.

A Deep Dive into Africa's Oil Politics
Untapped made a complex topic surprisingly accessible. The way it breaks down the scramble for Africa’s oil really opened my eyes to the political and economic dimensions. A must-read for anyone interested in international relations and resource management.

More Academic Than Expected
While the content is relevant and informative, I found it a bit too academic for my taste. The author's perspective is interesting, but I was hoping for a more engaging narrative. Good for research, but not for casual reading.

Eye-Opening Read!
I picked this up for a class project and was amazed at how much I didn't know about the oil situation in Africa. The insights were both enlightening and troubling, which is exactly what I was looking for. Would recommend to fellow students and curious readers.
