Ausgehend von Bereichen der traditionellen Geographie und veralteten Anstzen der Geopolitik, versucht der relativ neue Bereich der Sozialgeographie interdisziplinr das Verhltnis von Raumbedingungen und menschlichen Verhaltensmustern zu untersuchen. Dies tangiert Elemente der Geographie, Politik und Soziologie, aber auch der Psychologie, Geschichte u. a. Der Begriff des Raumes erhlt dabei eine Erweiterung, bzw. eine Vernderung. Raum ist in diesem Kontext nicht nur der Abstand zwischen existierenden Objekten, sondern wird auch sozial verstanden. So knnte eine bestehende Kommunikationsverbindung zwischen zwei Menschen irgendwo auf der Erde Ausdruck eines sozialen Raumes zwischen ihnen sein. Dieser Raum knnte im Gegensatz zur alten Auffassung als imaginr oder auch metaphysisch charakterisiert werden, da er im eigentlichen Sinne keine reale mebare Entsprechung aufweist. Es ist fr das Bestehen der Verbindung unerheblich, wo sich die Gesprchspartner aufhalten, die Entfernung zwischen ihnen spielt keine Rolle mehr. Wichtig ist nur die Handlung als raumkonstituierendes Mittel. Im Kontext globalisierter Lebensbedingungen kann von einem "Verschwinden der Distanz", von einem "Geographie oder RaumMachen" gesprochen werden, was das klassische Raumverstndnis demnach stark relativiert. Anhand des Models von Regionalisierungstypen von Benno Werlen wurde in dieser Arbeit versucht, die Region Sonneberg/Neustadt bei Coburg nher zu betrachten.
