Based on a true story, Up From Tribulation is first and foremost a tale of love and redemption. It is the story of a young convert to Mormonism, Willard Gibbs, who migrated from Virginia to Utah in the 1850s. He arrived in Utah broken hearted over his separation from his bride because he would not retract his new religion. In Salt Lake City, while living in the household of Bishop Mainwaring, a man with three wives, Willard began to learn more about the faith that was required to live his new religion and the necessity of increasing his trust in God. To his great surprise, he also discovered love again ... and eventually learned that such new love didn't require him to lose or violate his love for his lost wife.
