The main focus of this book is to understand urban growth with population change and slum conditions of Dire Dawa city using GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques .The data sources are master plan of the city for the year 1938, Aerial photographs for two periods (1966, 1996) with QuickBird image for 2008, which can be used to recognize urban area growth and predict its direction for the same area. The result of this study show that the total built up area increase by 277% from 1938 to 1966 with annual growth rate 4.7%. The built up area expand by 41% from 1966 to 1996 with annual growth rate 1.2%. The built up area of the city in 2008 was calculated as 1352 hectare. The built up area increase by 6% from 1996 to 2008 with the annual growth rate of 0.5%.Moreover Slum situation of the city analyzed mainly in terms of inadequate access route, unplanned and irregular settlement, unplanned and dense settlement, population density, inadequate access to sanitation and informal settlement conditions.
