As English in the Czech Republic is mostly taught as a foreign language, Czech teachers tend to use EFL materials that contain standardised varieties of English. Put differently, they are likely to rely on coursebooks published in Englishspeaking countries. However, some aspects of these coursebooks are often inappropriate for Czech students. This case study deals with a particular class of Czech preintermediate learners in a private language school in the Czech Republic and investigates whether Inside Out Preintermediate, which was published in the United Kingdom, satisfies their needs and whether it is suitable for the teaching situation there. This book was written for English teachers who need to determine whether a coursebook that they intend to use is appropriate for their students. It includes an extensive evaluation criteria checklist which can be used for this purpose.
