Los Productos forestales no maderables (PFNMs) presentan variedad de formas, orgenes y usos; incluyen plantas y animales recolectados en forma silvestre o sistemas agroforestales. Los bienes y servicios ecosistmicos (SE) que proveen los ecosistemas forestales y su biodiversidad son la base de nuestra subsistencia y del desarrollo econmico social del cual depende nuestro bienestar. La valoracin comnmente no escapa a los principios de la economa neoclsica con visin unidimensional, quedando fuera de anlisis valores sociales, culturales y espirituales. Gestionar los SE y los PFNMs, requiere inevitablemente trabajar desde una perspectiva integradora e interdisciplinaria, para que la toma de decisin y las polticas de gestin estn dirigidas a mantener la resiliencia del ecosistema, las races culturales, sistemas de valores y creencia de las comunidades y de la sociedad en general. En la cuenca del ro Botanamo, ubicada en la Reserva Forestal Imataca (Venezuela), las comunidades que habitan en el sector, utilizan el 76% de las especies nativas de los bosques de la localidad, siendo mas frecuentes los usos medicinales y alimenticios como parte de sus recursos de subsistencia.
