Bei steigenden Volumina sinken die Gewinnmargen und erfordern somit eine erhhte Umschlaggeschwindigkeit der Finanzprodukte, um die Ertrge zu stabilisieren und wenn mglich zu erhhen. Damit steigen die Risiken, die jedes Geschft mit sich bringen und jedes involvierte Unternehmen ist bestrebt, diese Risikozunahme systematisch zu kontrollieren und zu steuern. Sptestens seit der Finanzkrise in den frhen Neunzigern, die fr zahlreiche Unternehmen das Ende bedeutete, wei man, dass astronomische Verluste durch schlechte berwachung und schlechtes Management von finanziellen Risiken drohen. Bei Inkaufnahme eines Risikos, was Voraussetzung fr eine gebhrende KapitalPerformance ist, kann ein vollkommenes Ausbleiben der Konsequenzen bei Risikoeintritt nicht verhindert werden. Im Risikocontrolling spielt die Feststellung dieses Risikopotenzials eine zentrale Position, da ein Unternehmen sicherstellen muss, dass etwaig auftretende Verluste auch gedeckt werden knnen. Der Value at Risk erfasst dieses Risikopotenzial und ermglicht seinen Betrachtern, die Marktrisiken zu messen, zu steuern und zu kontrollieren.
