La variacin gentica fue investigada en 5 intermareales de localidades desde el norte del golfo San Matas (4223S) hasta el norte del golfo San Jorge (4502S). Fueron estudiados 15 loci por medio de electroforesis vertical en gel de almidn, 10 loci fueron polimorficos. El porcentaje de loci polimorfitos (criterio P0.95 t P0.99) vario entre 50% y 53.33% y entre 33.33% y 46.67% respectivamente. El rango de la heterocigosis media esperada por locus (He) fue de 0.128 (Bajo OliveraEl Sotano) a 0.160 (Puerto Madryn); este rango es similar a lo observado para otras especies de vieiras. Todos los loci se encotraron en equilibrio de HardyWeinberg. La distancia gentica estimada entre poblaciones fue significativamente mas bajas a aquellas reportadas por comparacin entre poblaciones de diferentes especies de pectinidos, sugiriendo que estas 5 poblaciones bajo estudio serian la misma especie ( Aequipecten tehuelchus). La ausencia de alelos fijados exclusivos tambien apoya el supuesto.
