Im Mittelpunkt des Supply Chain Management steht nicht mehr das isoliert betrachtete Unternehmen, sondern liegt die Betrachtung auf der gesamten Wertschpfungskette und deren Optimierung unter Einbezug modernster Informations und Kommunikationstechnologien. Die Lagerbestandsverantwortung liegt beim Vendor Managed Inventory nicht mehr beim Kunden selbst, sondern wird dem Lieferanten bertragen. Dieser steuert selbstndig unter Einhaltung vorher festgelegter Bestandsgrenzen die Belieferung des Kundenlagers.
