Unter dem Kommando Karl Koldeweys versuchen die Seeleute und Wissenschaftler fast ein Jahr lang, nach Norden vorzudringen. Sie kmpfen gegen vernichtende Schneestrme und tdliche Klte, Schneeblindheit, Hunger, Durst und ihre Angst: Als die Schiffe im Nebel getrennt werden und die "Hansa" vom Packeis zerdrckt wird, retten sich die Schiffbrchigen auf eine Scholle.
