Anhand des intertextuellen Verfahrens analysiert Eva Bauer Lucca den verborgenen Konstruktionscharakter des Romans und zeigt, dass Reminiszenzen an Goethes Faust ein konstitutives Element des Doktor Faustus bilden. Die Autorin untersucht die Abfolge der offenen Zitate, eine Form von explizit markierter Intertextualitt, und weist die Parallelerzhlung zur Lebensgeschichte von Thomas Manns Romanheld Adrian Leverkhn und Goethes Figur Heinrich Faust in Form einer 'mise en abyme' nach. Als Zeitkritik betrachtet erhalten die Bezge auf die Fausttradition und auf Goethe selbst eine neue Bedeutung, die durch die erstmalige Auswertung eines Manuskripts von Thomas Mann unterstrichen wird.
