Es mag mehrere Grnde dafr geben, einer ist in jedem Fall die herausragend inszenierte Wandlung der Hauptfigur Rappelkopf vom Misanthrop zum pensionierten Menschenfeind'. Dieser Aspekt der Wandlung soll deswegen auch im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit stehen. Vorangeschickt wird ein biographischer Abriss von Raimunds Leben, der sich hauptschlich mit (negativen) Vorfllen in seinem Leben beschftigen soll, und einer allgemeinen Bestandsaufnahme der vormrzlichen Gesellschaft. Der Grund fr diesen Vorspann liegt vor allem in der Wichtigkeit und der engen Verknpfung dieser Umstnde mit dem ganzen Stck, besonders aber mit der Figur des Rappelkopfs. Auch wenn eine zu eng gefasste biographische Interpretation unpassend sein mag, ist es doch nicht zu bersehen, dass erhebliche Parallelitten zwischen Raimund und Rappelkopf, aber auch anderen Figuren bestehen. Der menschenfeindliche Rappelkopf bildet also die Ausgangsbasis und wird von Raimund in seinem rasenden Wahn besonders wirksam dargestellt, um im Verlauf der Handlung deutlich seine Wandlung zeigen zu knnen. Der leitmotivische Gebrauch des Spiegels und daraus resultierende Schaffung eines Doppelgngers durch den Alpenknig bilden so den ersten Hhepunkt. Rappelkopf, der am Gipfel seines Wahns smtlichen Kontakt zu seinen Mitmenschen aufgekndigt hat, soll in einem Versuch' wieder in die Gesellschaft gefhrt werden. Langsam aber stetig kann man den Wandel mitverfolgen, allmhlich distanziert sich Rappelkopf immer mehr von sich selbst. Das tragische Finale stellt ein Duell dar, das nur einen Verlierer kennen kann.
