Quarante ans aprs la mort de saint Martin, soixantedix ans avant les dbuts de saint Benot, une exprience monastique originale fut tente dans le ' dsert ' du Jura par deux frres, Romain et Lupicin. Les ' institutions ' jurassiennes, inspires de celles de Provence, relais de l'Orient, mais adaptes au ' temprament gaulois ' et la rudesse du climat, atteignirent leur perfection sous le troisime des 'Pres du Jura ', saint Oyend, mort entre 512 et 514. Peu aprs la mort de ce saint, un de ses disciples, son confident, a racont avec autant d'art que de ferveur, en un harmonieux triptyque, la vie des trois Pres. La valeur littraire de cette uvre, ' fondamentale pour l'ancien monachisme en France ' (P. Antin), ajoute son vif intrt historique et spirituel. Les souvenirs de l'auteur, compltant ceux des anciens, fournissent la narration mille traits vcus illustrant les aspects les plus varis de l'histoire des Ve et VIe sicles, de la Gaule romaine au royaume burgonde. La spiritualit monastique s'y trouve discrtement enseigne travers les portraits contrasts des trois Pres, l'austrit laissant toujours place la sagesse et aux gestes de dlicate charit.
