Il fut surtout un voyageur, uvrant pour la paix en Europe et ce jusqu la fin de son pontificat en 1054. Il lutta pour la rforme des m urs ecclsiastiques et dfendit la suprmatie pontificale. En excommuniant le patriarche Keroularios, il donna un caractre dcisif au schisme avec l glise d Orient (1054).Cette dition critique est le fruit des dcouvertes rcentes sur les manuscrits. Le texte latin a t recollationn et la bibliographie complte. L ouvrage est en outre prcd d un nouvel avant propos.
