El Virus Papiloma Humano tipo18 (HPV18) es uno de los principales responsables del desarrollo de cncer de cuello de tero. Este virus presenta una prevalencia de 1,1% en la poblacin femenina sana y de 16,5% en cnceres de cuello de tero a nivel mundial y por su importancia clnica ha sido incorporado en la frmula de las vacunas comerciales. Con el objetivo de contribuir al diseo de nuevas metodologas de deteccin de HPV18 se desarroll una PCR que present una especificidad de 1 (IC95% 0,791) y una sensibilidad de 0,54 (0,270,81). A pesar de su baja sensibilidad para el diagnstico (valor de referencia: 0,95), la secuenciacin del fragmento amplificado permiti un anlisis de circulacin viral y filogenia. Se identificaron un 86% de variantes genticas de origen Europeo y un 14% de origen AsiticoAmericano. Estos resultados apoyaran la hiptesis de la introduccin del virus durante la inmigracin europea a la regin. Este tipo de anlisis representa un salto cualitativo para comprender los procesos de propagacin viral a travs de las poblaciones humanas. Esta conexin es fundamental para el monitoreo de la infeccin por HPV en las instancias pre y postvacunacin.
