La viudez implica un hito de transformacin en la vida de una persona as como en las distinciones que los dems hacen de ella.Aunque existe la creencia que en la vejez las personas se hacen ms lentas cognitivamente o no pueden aprender, desde la Teora de la Modificabilidad Estructural Cognitiva (TMEC), el funcionamiento cognitivo se relaciona ms que con la edad, con funciones cognitivas de base, cuyo operar se liga tanto con elementos afectivomotivacionales como con las interacciones en que participa la persona. Para esta modificabilidad cognitiva, es esencial la mediacin de otros para lograr ambientes activomodificantes que la potencien. Esta investigacin, a travs de un estudio cualitativo de relatos cruzados, describe cambios en las interacciones y en las auto y heterorreferencias a causa de la viudez, que pueden ser consideradas desencadenantes de cambios en el funcionamiento cognitivo de adultos mayores viudos y viudas. La relacin entre ambas variables, objetivo de esta investigacin, es una atribucin que se realiza a partir de una observacin de segundo orden de lo descrito por las y los entrevistados.
