Die Arbeit untersucht die kunsttheoretische Reflexion innerhalb der niederlndischen Kunst des 15. bis 17. Jahrhunderts. Im Zentrum stehen Darstellungen des Knstlers, in denen die soziale und intellektuelle Stellung des Malers thematisiert und aufgewertet werden konnten. Dies sind zunchst Beispiele des Themas "Lukas malt die Madonna", die im ersten Teil unter Bercksichtigung des Lukaspatronats der znftisch organisierten Maler analysiert werden. Der zweite Teil behandelt Identifikationsfiguren, Motive und Themen heidnischantiker Herkunft (Apelles, Zeuxis, Protogenes, Pygmalion, die Malerei im System der artes et mechanicae, Merkur, Minerva) sowie Allegorien im Zusammenhang mit der frhneuzeitlichen Erfindung der personifizierten Malerei (Pictura). Der dritte Teil wertet die untersuchten Bildinhalte mit Bezug auf die berlieferte soziale Stellung des Knstlers und die frhneuzeitliche Kunsttheorie aus und zeigt die weitere Entwicklung der bildlichen Diskurse ber den Vergleich zwischen Malerei und Poesie ("ut pictura poesis"), die Anerkennung der Malerei als gelehrte Kunst ("pictor doctus") oder die berhhung der manuellen Produktion in Form von PicturaAllegorien auf.
