Die Reihe 'Ausgaben Deutscher Literatur des VV. bis XVIII. Jahrhunderts startete 1967 mit dem Ziel, zur besseren Textkenntnis der vernachlssigten mittleren deutschen und neulateinischen Literatur beizutragen. In der Reihe erscheinen kritische Gesamtausgaben in einzelnen Fllen auch Auswahlausgaben der Werke bedeutender Autoren. Die Ausgaben werden in Textbnde und Realienbnde aufgeteilt. Sie enthalten neben dem Textcorpus, einem kritischen Apparat und einem ausfhrlichen wissenschaftlichen Apparat auch soweit vorhanden Briefwechsel, Tagebcher, Gesprche, Zeugnisse der Zeitgenossen zu Person und Werk des Autors, Bildnisse usw. Daneben gibt es Dokumentationsreihen, in denen einzelne historisch interessante Texte zu einem reprsentativen berblick ber ihre Gattung zusammengestellt sind (Beispiele hierfr sind die Reihen 'Drama' und 'Roman').
