Am 1. Mai 2004 nahm die Europische Union zehn neue Mitglieder auf, darunter auch Estland, Lettland und Litauen. Das seit 1995 der EU zugehrige Schweden wurde von diesem Groprojekt unmittelbar betroffen. Zum einen vernderte sich die Ostseeregion und damit der geographische Raum, zu dem Schweden gehrt. Zum anderen wurde das Land ein Akteur in diesem Erweitungsprozess. Diese Arbeit analysiert, welche Positionen die schwedische Regierung zwischen 1995 und 2001 in der Frage des EUBeitritts der drei baltischen Staaten vertrat. Diese werden innen und auenpolitischen Kontexten und Motiven gegenbergestellt, um Erklrungen fr die schwedische Politik aufzuzeigen. Das Vorgehen Schwedens wird auerdem im Zusammenhang mit demjenigen Finnlands und Dnemarks gesehen.
