Wahrend m dem Tell uber tngonometrische Reihen das Haupt mteresse auf der Konvergenzfrage hegt, werden in dem Teil uber Ortho gonalpolynome mehr die mdlvlduellen Eigenschaften derselben in den Vordergrund gestellt und auch zwel Paragraphen uber dIe allgemeinen Kugelfunktionen hmzugefugt. Ich erlaube mir, den Leser auf meine einheltliche Behandlung der sog. 'klasslschen' Orthogonalpolynome aufmerksam zu machen, dIe auf einer verallgemeinerten 'RODRIGUEZFormula' beruht. Es wlrd ferner einiges fiber neue Untersuchungen asymptotischer Eigenschaften der Orthogonalpolynome und ihrer Nullstellen berichtet. 1m allgemeinen habe ich mich bemuht, das bekannte und ausgezeichnete, aber in eimgen Punkten schon etwas veraltete Buch von G. SZEGO uber orthogonale Polynome hier und da zu ergimzen, soweit das im Rahmen eines didak tischen Buches moglich war. 1m groBen und ganzen ist das vorliegende Buch eme Ubersetzung meiner vergriffenen 'Sene ortogonali di funzioni' , welche 1948 in hektographierter Form (bei Gheroni, Turin) erschienen war, jedoch mit vielen Verbesserungen und Zusatzen, die ihm ein neues Gesicht geben. An Vorkenntnissen ist der Inhalt der 'Unendlichen Relhen' von K. KNOPP nfitzlich, doch kommt man auch mit geringeren Vorausset zungen aus. Vor allem braucht der Leser aber eine gute Kenntnis der Dlfferentialund Integralrechnung mIt EmschluB (wenn moghch!) des LEBEsGuEschen Integrals.
