Or celleci puisait, non seulement une part de son information, mais son inspiration, ses principes et sa dynamique dans la Bible. On connat la suite, c'estdire la ralit d'aujourd'hui : au nom d'une certaine conception de l'histoire, qui n'exclut pas ses origines des partipris qui n'ont rien voir avec d'incontestables acquis et exigences pistmologiques, le principe historiographique d'Isral est ignor un point tel qu'on peut parfois se demander s'il n'y a pas l un vritable tabou. Le prsent ouvrage, partir d'un exemple consciemment limit mais particulirement significatif, l'' histoire ' de Gdon dans le livre des Juges, voudrait aider rtablir un certain ordre des choses. L'criture de l'histoire, en quoi il y a historiographie certes, mais aussi histoire tout court, transcende, un moment ou l'autre, la diversit des genres littraires, voire les conditions et possibilits d'accs la matrialit de la vrit, pour dire un projet ncessaire l'homme comme toute culture : fixer intelligiblement sa mmoire. Bien avant Hrodote, la Bible l'a enseign l'homme occidental.
