Nel 1891 Paul Gauguin riusc ad ottenere dal governo francese una missione culturale a titolo gratuito per Tahiti, con lo scopo di fissare il carattere e la luce della regione. Gauguin voleva sottoporre il proprio passato a una radicale operazione di azzeramento. La lontananza geografica, per lui, era funzionale al completamento di una tormentata ricerca interiore che reclamava nuovi spazi, nuove luci, nuovi confini. Pochi anni dopo, un altro artista prese il mare per un lungo viaggio oltre la civilt europea: era un olandese e, a differenza del gi noto Gauguin, non aveva uno scomodo passato di cui disfarsi. Il viaggio non doveva favorire una rimozione, ma rivelarsi propedeutico alla nascita di un artista definito, dotato di uno stile proprio. Lartista era Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp (Stefano De Rosa).
