T. A. Hoffmanns wird der Wahnsinn in betrchtlichem Umfang thematisiert. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit setze ich mich damit auseinander, mit welcher Motivation und auf welche Weise dies geschieht, welchen Stellenwert der Wahnsinn in den Darstellungen einnimmt und was die Darstellung des Wahnsinns als Kehrseite des Verstandes schlielich auch ber diesen auszusagen vermag. Da eine Bercksichtigung des historischmedizinischen Kontextes unabdingbar ist, wird anhand einer historischen Dimensionierung der Wissensstand der Gesellschaft des beginnenden 19. Jahrhunderts aufgezeigt. In einem zweiten Abschnitt wird beschrieben, auf welche Weise und mit welchen ideengeschichtlichen Einflssen die Knstler der Romantik das Thema aufgriffen und produktiv verarbeiteten. Obgleich von einer zu engen biografischen Deutung abgesehen wird, verdeutlicht ein kurzer biografischer Abschnitt jeweils zu beiden Autoren, welche Beweggrnde zu einer Beschftigung mit dem Wahnsinn fhrten. Zur Analyse werden die in den verschiedenen Erzhlungen beschriebenen Krankheitsverlufe kurz umrissen, um diese anschlieend aus bestimmten Perspektiven bewertet zu werden. Die Betrachtung der medizinischen Phnomene erfolgt hierbei vornehmlich im Kontext des Wissenstandes der romantischen Epoche und spart somit rein psychoanalytische Deutungen aus. Anknpfend wird ergrndet, mit welchen sprachlichen Mitteln der Wahnsinn dargestellt bzw. verbal simuliert wird. Dazu werden jene Passagen, in welchen die Symptome des lauernden oder ausbrechenden Wahnsinns geschildert werden, nach Aspekten der Wortwahl und wiederkehrenden Motiven geprft.
