Sie gleicht mittlerweile in wesentlichen Dingen der Ehe in den westlichen Industriestaaten. Sie produziert eine hnlich rcklufige Kinderzahl und hat eine hnlich steigende Scheidungsrate. Dieser Trend begann aber erst nach dem Ende Pazifikkrieg und der Abschaffung des Stammfamiliensystems durch die alliierte Besatzungsmacht. In der Moderne 18681945, haben sich Heirat und Ehe zunchst antizyklisch entwickelt. Die Familie stand stark im Spannungsfeld zwischen japanischer Tradition und westlicher Moderne, blieb aber stark von traditionellen, konservativen Wertvorstellungen beherrscht. Durch die Restauration des stammfamiliren Familiensystems, wurde die Familie im sich rasant nach westlichem Vorbild modernisierenden Japan, der Hort des Konservatismus.
