Die vorliegende Studie iiber theoretlsche und empirische AnsAtze zum Problem der EhestabilltlU hatte zwel Ausgangspunkte, nilmlich zum einen meine Beschilftigung mit dem theoretlschen Ansatz der 'New Home Econo mics' von Gary BECKER, zum anderen einen Hinwels von Professor OPP auf die Untersuchung von BRINTON (1983), die slch mit der ErkliirbarkeU japanischer Scheldungsraten lm Kontext des Modells ratlonalen Handelns befaJ3t. Zunilchst wurde versucht, aus dem Gebilude der Okonomischen Theorle der Familie Hypothesen iiber die Ursachen von Ehescheldungen abzuleUen. Belm Verglelch dleser Hypothesen mit sozlologtschen und psychologischen Aussagen erwelst slch eine systematislerende Rekonstruktion dleser 'traditlo nell en' sozialwissenschaftllchen Theorlen zur Ehestabilltat als erforderlich. Eine solche Rekonstruktion steht lm Zentrum von Kapltel II der vorliegenden Studie. Kapitel HI enha.lt die Aussagen einer an BECKER orlentlerten Okono mischen Theorle der Ehescheldung sowie einen Verglelch dieser Theorle mit den traditlonellen Ansiltzen. 1m Kapltel N schlie1Slich wird versucht, die in den vorangegangenen Ab schnttten aufgestellten Hypothesen zur ScheldungshiluflgkeU in elner Ag gregatdatenanalyse iiber die Kreise der Bundesrepublik Deutschland em pirisch zu priifen. Urn diese Analysen zu ermOglichen, wurde nach Durch sicht verglelchbarer Analysen fUr andere Staaten eine Datenbank demogra phiScher und sozioOkonomischer Merkmale der Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf Krelsebene aufgebaut.
